Driving corporate innovation without an Innovation Strategy is like driving a car that doesn't have a steering wheel

Although we see massive investment by companies in effective process management, innovation often remains a frustrating effort by many companies, where high expectations outweigh the initial benefits. Innovation initiatives often fail and successful innovators find it difficult to maintain their performance - many companies such as Yahoo, Hewlett-Packard and countless others have a similar experience. Why is it so difficult to build and maintain the ability to innovate? The reasons are much deeper than the usual reason, namely a weak execution. However, the main problem of efforts to improve innovation has its origins in the absence of an innovation strategy and a poorly set corporate culture.

Above all, the most common point of failure we see in an organization's innovation strategy is the inability to be honest with our employees about what is achievable and what is not. A CEO who "declares" that an organization will become a "leader in innovation" without a meaningful strategy poses a huge risk. The very word innovation becomes mandatory in the vocabulary of many managers, it is used for every change or improvement, and the very essence of innovation disappears.

Why have an Innovation Strategy developed in the company?

Working with innovation requires a systematic process and agreement at the various levels of management. Many times, as outlined above, it happens that the owner or director of the company is also convinced on the basis of his statements that it is necessary to establish innovations in his company, but his direct subordinates look at innovations from a different perspective. They see lengthy processes, missing employee skills and missing technologies. The second example is managers who are unable to work with risk and uncertainty and are making enormous resistance to creativity and innovation. However, it is ironic that, although innovation is commonly associated with new products and services, some research shows that the introduction of new products through innovation is one of the least successful ways to achieve expected growth, with failure rates, in some companies it exceeds 60 percent. It must be said that the launch of an innovative product will usually bring companies an exponential increase in sales. The answer to why this is the case is the insufficient emphasis on working with the company's innovation strategy.

Working with innovation is a process that brings new products to market, several risks. Often, even the most experienced executives cannot predict with certainty which products will succeed and which will fail.

He who does nothing will do nothing wrong

Properly set corporate culture is, after the lack of strategy, perhaps the strongest obstacle to establishing innovation in companies. Even the most amazing idea in such a closed culture "is like a cry in a vacuum." Employees have no one to turn to with their ideas, they are rejected and their creativity is not sufficiently used. Without dealing with your corporate culture, everything you do can be a waste of time at the end of the day. You simply cannot sustain innovation without a supportive culture, and your business cannot prosper in the future without innovation support.
